What is a minor ailment?
A condition that patients can reliably self-diagnose based on classical symptoms, that is typically uncomplicated and short-term. These can be managed with self-care strategies and minor treatments that your Pharmacist may now prescribe for.

The 13 conditions are:

No appointment necessary. Bring a valid Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card to our Pharmacy and talk to the Pharmacist for your Minor Ailments assessment.

Allergic Rhinitis

  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Watery, red eyes
  • Itchy nose, eyes, or throat
  • sneezing, coughing

Cold Sores (Herpes Labialis)

  • Tingling, burning or itching sensation
  • Small, fluid-filled blisters (anywhere on face, often on lip border)
  • Crusting blisters
  • Red or inflamed skin around the rash

Conjunctivitis - Pink eye (bacterial, allergic and viral)

  • Pink/red, watery or itchy eye(s)
  • Sticky lashes (with pus/mucus)
  • Difficult to open eye(s) in the morning
  • Burning or gritty sensation in the eye(s)

Heartburn or Acid reflux (GERD)

  • Heartburn, burning sensation (from lower chest to neck)
  • Unpleasant sour taste in mouth
  • Hoarse voice, bad breath, coughs/hiccups
  • Bloating or feeling sick
  • Trouble sleeping

Hemorrhoids

  • Itching, burning or swelling around the anus/rectum area
  • Bright red blood during or after bowel movement
  • Constipation
  • Lump present in the anus/rectum area

Impetigo (skin infection)

  • Red sores, blisters (anywhere on body but often on exposed areas such as face, hands)
  • Crusty, golden-brown patches, yellow discharge
  • Itchy, painful sensation
  • Anyone may be affected, common in infants and children

Insect Bites and Hives

  • Itchy bumps or patches on skin, blistering
  • Pain, swelling or redness
  • Burning/stinging sensation
  • May be in one area or spread across body

Muscle Aches and Pains (Sprains or Strains)

  • Pain, tenderness or weakness (often around ankle, foot, wrist, thumb, knee, leg or back)
  • Swollen or bruised injury
  • Muscle spasms or cramping
  • Difficulty bearing weight on injury or using area normally

Oral Thrush (Candidal stomatitis)

  • Thick white patches on tongue, roof of mouth, inside cheeks, lips and/or gums
  • Loss/unpleasant taste in mouth
  • Cracking, redness at the corners of the mouth
  • Sore tongue or gums

Premenstrual and Period Cramps (Dysmenorrhea)

  • Cramps in the lower abdomen
  • Pain in the lower back just before period starts
  • Pain lasting hours to days
  • Period pain affecting your day-to-day life

Skin Rash, Eczema (Dermatitis)

Skin may be:

  • Dry or scaly
  • Itchy
  • Red or patchy (changes in color)
  • Blisters

Tick Bites, Prevention of Lyme Disease

  • Tick bite by black-legged tick
  • Red lump on skin
  • Swelling, itching, bruising, blistering

Urinary Tract Infections, Uncomplicated

  • Frequent or urgent urination
  • Burning sensation whilst urinating
  • Lower abdomen pain
  • Cloudy, dark or strong smelling urine

Acne (Mild)

  • Pimples (red pumps with or without pus), whiteheads or blackheads
  • Itchiness, dryness or pain of the skin
  • Located on the face, neck, shoulders/upper arms, back or chest

Canker Sores (Aphthous Ulcers)

  • On the inside of the mouth, cheeks, lips or sides of the tongue 
  • Small round white/yellow coloured spots with a red border
  • Pain or burning/tingling in the spot

Diaper Rash (Diaper Dermatitis)

  • Limited to the surface of the skin where diaper is worn 
  • Painful, red, warm skin and rash in the diaper area 
  • Pain and crying while peeing or changing diaper 
  • Bright red patches in skin folds

Yeast Infection (Vulvovaginal Candidiasis)

  • Severe itching of vulva and vaginal areas 
  • Stinging/burning and/or redness
  • Thick, white “cottage cheese”-like discharge with no odor

Pinworms and Threadworms

  • Itching around the anal area, especially at night 
  • Disrupted sleep or irritability
  • Observed worms that resemble white threads

Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy

  • Mild symptoms of nausea, vomiting or dry heaving 
  • Sometimes called “morning sickness” but can occur at any time of day 
  • Most common during first trimester of pregnancy
